Khakassia. Born in Russia. Graduated from Tashkent State University named after V. I. Lenin (1968). Works as the head of the Department of Archaeology, Ethnography, and Local History at Khakass State University named after N. F. Katanov. Specialist in the field of ethnography, Kyrgyz studies, and Turkology.
Academician of the Russian Academy of Social Sciences (1997). Awarded the medal "Dank" by the Decree of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic for "significant contribution to the study of the history and culture of the Kyrgyz people" (2002). Published over 130 scientific works, including 12 monographs.
