Honored Artist of the Kyrgyz Republic Ainagul Sadykova

Ainagul Sadykova

Ainagul Sadykova belongs to a generation of talented artists from the 1970s. Among the artists and creative intelligentsia of that time, she was already a recognized master. Ainagul Sadykova is the first Kyrgyz woman artist and painter.

She graduated from VGIK in 1970. She has participated in exhibitions since 1968. She is a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR.

The paintings of Ainagul Sadykova are harmonious and poetic. Her portraits, landscapes, and still lifes share a common inner spirit. She is an Honored Artist of the Kyrgyz Republic and was awarded the "Dank" medal. She is an associate professor at the National Academy of Arts of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Ainagul was born in 1942 in the south of Kyrgyzstan, in the village of Govsuvor, located deep in the mountainous Batken region. This place, remote from the noise of civilization, is surrounded by mountains and is immersed in apricot orchards and walnut groves. Ainagul's parents were peasants who joined a collective farm. They worked tirelessly in the fields and at home. Ainagul was intimately familiar with the age-old traditions of Kyrgyz folk art, not through hearsay, albums, or theatrical performances, but from her upbringing. She absorbed this love, one might say, with her mother's milk. Her mother, Yrys, was a well-known craftswoman in the area, with a keen sense of beauty. The entire village of Govsuvor wore the chapan she sewed - the traditional outer garment of the Kyrgyz people. Her father, Sadik, was also a folk craftsman. He made boots with pointed toes (choky) and carved the lasts for them himself.

Ainagul does not remember her father. He died in World War II in 1945 during the storming of Königsberg. Soon after, her mother passed away. Her older brother Turdubai returned from the front as a disabled veteran. Her brother Turgunbai and little Ainagul were taken in by relatives.

Turgunbai noticed Ainagul's inclination for drawing when he was still a schoolboy, sculpting eagles, goats, and gazelles from clay.

In 1965, Ainagul graduated from the Frunze Art School and enrolled in the art faculty of the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography in Moscow (VGIK). After successfully graduating in 1970, A. Sadykova returned to Kyrgyzstan.

From 1971 to 1979, she worked as a teacher at the Frunze Art School, and later as a lecturer and associate professor in the painting department at the National Academy of Arts.

She works in the style of genre painting, portraiture, and landscapes. She has a keen sensitivity to nature, its character, and the color and spatial relationships. One of A. Sadykova's best works is the painting "Return from the Field" (1974), which expressively conveys the atmosphere of a southern evening with its golden and lilac hues, and the warm haze over the sun-baked earth.

Sadykova's portraits are characterized by a focus on the main traits of the model's character, with unique and colorful solutions: "Grandmother Shaarbana" (1971), "Young Man with a Guitar" (1974).

In her still lifes, she addresses complex lighting challenges, conveying the light of the object forms ("Still Life," 1974). In a work like "Still Life with Pomegranates," the character and dynamics of the free brushstroke play an active role, as well as the color solutions that reveal the materiality of the objects, their tangibility, and textural variety. With simple painting techniques, where the compositional intent is almost imperceptible, the artist conveys the shine of the samovar, the tangible beauty of ripe fruits, matte bowls, and the shimmer of the background.

Sadykova's landscapes are immediate, finely harmonized in color, and fresh in their pictorial embodiment ("Govsuvor," 1972).
