In a press release issued on October 22, the foundation expressed the opinion that the initiative of the akims of the Kochkor district is based on a sincere intention to preserve the memory of Turdakun Usubaliev. However, the family members disagree with this initiative, pointing out that Usubaliev himself always emphasized the importance of historical memory and the preservation of place names related to the country's history.
“Renaming Kochkor, on the contrary, may lead to a change in the historical appearance of the region and the loss of cultural and geographical identity. Turdakun Usubaliev always stressed the need for careful treatment of historical names and toponyms,” the foundation's statement reads.
Furthermore, the foundation noted that the memory of Turdakun Usubaliev is already actively preserved in Kochkor—there are memorial signs established, and cultural and educational events dedicated to his legacy are held.
The statement was signed by Esen Usubaliev, who is the executive director of the foundation and the grandson of Turdakun Usubaliev.
