In the mountains of the Kadamjai district of the Batken region lies the pasture of Mashalan [also known as Bashy-Algan]. Here grows a remarkable tree called Koshbok-Ata, which is over three hundred years old.

Egemberdi Nazarov, a local resident, shared interesting legends related to this tree and the pasture with a correspondent from Turmush. He noted that Koshbok-Ata rises to 20-25 meters and has a diameter of over 5 meters, continuing to grow in these lands for three centuries.

“I spent my childhood in these expanses, and one could say it is inextricably linked to the Mashalan pasture and this ancient tree. There are many captivating legends about the past of this place. The Mashalan pasture has several versions of its name. It would be wonderful if historians explored these versions in more detail,” Nazarov said.
According to available data, until the 1890s, there was a large cattle market in these territories, where traders from Tajikistan and Afghanistan came to exchange livestock for gold and silver. Trade here was quite active. Some researchers associate the name Mashalan with the fact that there used to be a military training ground in this area. There are also grim versions suggesting that many murders, including executions, occurred on these lands. Even today, human remains can be found here,” he added.

Nazarov also mentioned that in the past this area was called Bash-Algan, and later it received the name Mashalan. “There are rumors that many huge snakes, known to our ancestors, inhabited these places. The legend says that a great snake once perished here, and for 40 years nothing could grow on that piece of land,” he reported.

The pasture of Mashalan is located 25-30 kilometers south of the city of Kadamjai in the Batken region.
