As part of the "Our People Abroad" series, we present the story of Zhannat Zalkarbek kyzy.

Zhannat was born on August 14, 2005, in the village of Kök-Art, located in the Kara-Kulja district of the Osh region.

“I grew up in an ordinary family. My father works as a driver, and my mother is a teacher. We have five children in our family. Until 2011, I lived with my parents, after which I entered the 1st grade of the Jutanga Subanova Secondary School, which I graduated from in 2022. That same year, I became a student at the Faculty of Journalism at Osh State University. During my studies, I interned at one of the TV channels and at the university's TV studio 'Ümüt'. Now I am on the verge of my fourth year and working at another channel,” Zhannat shares.

She also talked about how she ended up in Germany:

“I aimed not only to study but also to broaden my horizons. Late in the fall, I submitted my documents for a summer job in Germany through a special company. For six months, I learned the German language. Eventually, I received an invitation — it’s a great fortune, as not all students get it. The most important thing is the visa. I gathered all the necessary documents and received my visa in 20 days. On June 16, I arrived in the town of Sassnitz on the island of Rügen, along with other girls.”

Zhannat talked about life in Germany:

“Many warned me that it would be difficult with food at first. But I had no problems with adaptation and nutrition. Germany is a highly developed country. Almost everyone wakes up at 5-6 in the morning, goes for walks or rides bicycles, and has light and healthy breakfasts.

Waste here is sorted: organic, paper, and plastic — everything is recycled. In our society, cycling can sometimes cause inconveniences on the road, while in Germany, it is the main mode of transport. Everyone uses bicycles, from young people to the elderly.

However, I noticed one downside: smoking and alcohol are common here. It seems that almost everyone smokes, and alcohol is consumed almost daily. Many young and older working-age people move to other cities or more developed countries, which leads to low birth rates.”

According to her, the language barrier was the main difficulty at the beginning of her stay in Germany.

“When I first arrived, I struggled with the language. Germans speak very quickly, and at first, I couldn’t understand them. But over time, I got used to it. There were no more serious problems,” she added.

“Now I work in a five-star hotel in the service sector. It’s not very hard work, but it’s not entirely easy either. I work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, and have two days off. On weekends, I travel to other cities and learn about the local culture. As for the salary: within this program, it is 12.58 euros per hour. After taxes and food expenses, I can earn over 100,000 soms,” she concluded.
