The work conducted from 2023 to 2025 on the rivers Kyzyl-Suu, Chatkal, Tyup, Kokomerin, and Chu did not reveal the presence of otters, raising concerns about the possible extinction of this species in Kyrgyzstan. However, a recent video recording indicates that the species may be entering the country from Kazakhstan.
Authorities emphasize the importance of conducting further research on the Turuk River to determine whether the observed otter is a solitary migrant or if there is a permanent population in the region.
