Last Sunday, a congress of the World Boxing federation took place in Rome, where Golovkin was the only candidate for the position of president. His predecessor, van der Vorst, had held this position since November 2023.

At 43 years old, Golovkin, who boasts 42 victories (37 of them by knockout), two losses, and one draw, has an impressive career. He held the IBF, WBA, and IBO titles, and also won a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games. In early 2024, Golovkin was elected president of the National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan, and in September of the same year, he headed the Olympic Commission of World Boxing, which was responsible for bringing boxing back into the program of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

World Boxing was founded in 2023 as a response to the International Boxing Association (IBA) and unites over 80 national federations.
