- The head of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Meder Mashiev, discussed the decrease in gold production both at Kumtor and in Kyrgyzstan as a whole in an interview with Tazabek.

According to the minister, 32 tons of gold were mined in the country in 2023, with a decrease expected to 26 tons in 2024, and it is also planned to mine 26 tons this year.

“The reduction in gold production negatively impacts the country's economy. We are actively working on solving this problem. Some companies have ceased operations, including gold extraction plants. However, starting in 2024, we expect an increase in production volumes. I am confident that by 2030, we will not only restore previous levels but also significantly increase them. We expect production to reach approximately 35 tons per year,” the minister noted.

The minister also mentioned new projects, such as the Solton-Sary deposit, where the Chinese company Zhong Ji Mining and OJSC "Kyrgyzaltyn" are operating. Mining has already begun, and next year the production of metallic gold is expected to start.

“Some companies, such as LLC 'Eti Bakyr Tereksai', are already increasing their production capacities at the Tereksai deposit, starting to mine over 1 ton. There are also large projects, for example, the Jamgyr deposit, where LLC 'Vertex Gold Company' is facing minor technical issues related to mineralogy, which is why the gold extraction plant is currently being modernized. There are also plans to build new plants in the south, at the large deposits of Zaav-Chaarat and Unkur-Tash. Both deposits contain significant reserves—about 100 tons, including 95 tons and 92 tons of confirmed reserves, respectively. This is our immediate prospect,” Mashiev added.

He emphasized that an increase in production is also observed among small and medium-sized companies.
