Gold Underfoot: Dubai Announces Plans to Build a Street Literally Made of Gold

Very soon, a new attraction will appear in Dubai, located near the famous Gold Souk market, where jewelry lovers can purchase gold and other adornments.

Given the absence of income taxes and the city's reputation as a luxury hub, it is no surprise that Dubai is often associated with the phrase "golden streets."

Very soon, this metaphor may become a reality with the opening of a real "golden street" in Dubai.

The new street will be part of the recently announced Dubai Gold District and will be "created using gold," although details of this project remain unknown (additional information is expected from the developer upon request from Euronews Travel).

Information about the creation of the Dubai Gold District was announced by the Dubai Media Office on January 27, but the exact opening date for the "Golden Street" has not yet been determined.

The Dubai Gold District is a rebranding of the existing Gold Souk, located in Deira, which brings together about 1,000 traders offering gold and jewelry.

According to the Dubai Media Office, the UAE ranks second in the world in physical gold trading. In 2024-2025, the country exported gold worth $53.41 billion (€44.6 billion).

The Gold Souk is a popular tourist destination in the Old Town, where spice, perfume, and antique markets are also located.

"Gold holds an important place in the culture and economy of Dubai, symbolizing our heritage and entrepreneurial spirit," noted Ahmed Al Haja, CEO of Dubai Festivals and Retail Establishment (DFRE), which is part of the Dubai Department of Economy and Tourism (DET).

"By creating this unique place, we are not only preserving heritage but also adapting it for a new era characterized by creativity and sustainability."

Iconic Tourist Attractions in Dubai

Dubai is known for many significant tourist attractions, including the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building on the planet, Ain Dubai — the largest Ferris wheel, and Deep Dive Dubai, the deepest diving pool.

In 2024, a climate-controlled promenade was opened on the Heart of Europe island, where it "rains" every 30 minutes. This street is part of The World Islands — an artificial archipelago created in the shape of a world map.

A "future loop" project is also planned in the city — a 2 km air-conditioned bridge that will connect various districts and important buildings, including the Dubai World Trade Centre, Museum of the Future, Emirates Towers, and Dubai International Financial Centre, as well as nearby metro stations.

This initiative aims to create a comfortable urban environment for pedestrians year-round, even during the hot summer months when temperatures can reach 45 °C.

Additionally, a "musical road" has been introduced in the emirate of Fujairah, where grooves in the asphalt create sound vibrations, reminiscent of the melody of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony when cars pass over it.
