Kairbek Toktosunov, who lives in the village of Bokonbaev on Issyk-Kul, is engaged in woodworking.

In a conversation with a Turmush correspondent, he shared his passion for this craft, which began in childhood. His grandfather and father also engaged in similar activities, and Kairbek decided to continue their work. “I make items that are gradually becoming rare in everyday life, such as ‘kökör’ [a bag for kumys], ‘könök’ [a leather bucket], ‘köngööl’ [a vessel for liquid food], as well as various bowls and ‘chanach’ [a bag made from goat skin]. I pay special attention to the leather processing process [‘ashatuu jasoo’ — leather tanning] and collect the horns of mountain goats to create decorations,” the master shares.

Unfortunately, many of these products are beginning to fade into the past, and the younger generation often does not even know how to make them. “It is important to work on preserving the traditional craftsmanship of the Kyrgyz people. If the youth continued our work, it would not disappear. For example, the handle of a kamchy is of great significance, and the kamchy itself is highly valued. I make different types of kamchy in my workshop and teach this to my grandson. My sons are also familiar with the craft but have chosen the path of entrepreneurship,” he adds.

Kairbek also noted that the kamchy has deep symbolic meaning. “By the way the kamchy hangs in the house, one can understand many things. For example, if it is hanging handle down, it means there are no men at home. Guests can determine if there is an adult girl in the house by the hook of the kamchy. If the kamchy is placed in a boot, it symbolizes that a guest has arrived and needs lodging. If the kamchy is dragged behind, it foretells bad news. The kamchy is a symbol of bravery and masculinity. A gift of a kamchy to a young man signifies trust and inspiration,” he says.

Tourists visiting the region often order kamchy. “I remember when we used to make Kyrgyz saddles, and their price reached up to 100 dollars. In my youth, I was fond of hunting and shot with a bow; now my grandchildren are learning this. The arrows made in my workshop can reach distances of up to 500 meters. When creating a large leather bag for kumys, I use special leather tanning methods,” Kairbek shares.
