In the Moscow district of the Chui region lies the village of Temen-Suu, located in the Ak-Suu rural district. The 83-year-old resident Mukhtarbek Mamytov shared the history of the name of this settlement in a conversation with a Turmush correspondent.

According to Mamytov, there are 12 rural communities within the Moscow district, among which is Ak-Suu, which includes the villages of Ak-Bashat, Temen-Suu, Bala-Ayilchy, Keper-Aryk, Chon-Aryk, Murake, and Ak-Torpok. The total population of this community is about 9,500 people, most of whom are engaged in agriculture, including crop production and livestock farming. Seven villages have secondary schools, as well as a health center and six feldsher-midwife stations. However, there are no kindergartens in the region.

“The history of many villages in the Chui region is connected to their names, often including words such as ‘suu’ and ‘aryk’. Examples of such names include Chon-Aryk, Keper-Aryk, Temen-Suu, Ak-Suu, and Kara-Suu. The history of these places reflects the fate of their residents, their interconnections, and the paths they have traveled. We must study historical sources to understand the origins of the places where we live. Over time, much can change, and some information may be lost,” noted the elder.

“I am 83 years old, and I am the chairman of the council of elders. Despite my age, I try to help local residents solve their problems and provide useful advice. Some call our village Tömön-Suu, which can be found in official documents. However, this is incorrect. I have lived here my whole life, and we have the river Temena, which originates in a mountain gorge, and this is what led to the name of our village. Over the years, the letter ‘e’ in the name seems to have been forgotten, and now we call it Temen-Suu. Others believe that the river flows downwards, which is where the name Tömön comes from. Such misunderstandings occur often, and it is unlikely that there are people left who remember the true name ‘Temene’,” added Mamytov.

According to the elder, the term “temene” translates to hole or gap, which corresponds to the shape of the water source in the mountains, resembling a needle used for sewing blankets and felt products. Nearby is also the village of Bala-Ayilchy, where a respected man named Balayilchy lived in the past, who saved his people during the uprising of 1916. He established friendly relations with the Russians and provided local residents with identification documents. The famous Kyrgyz writer Asanbek Stamov mentioned this, and Mamytov, being his friend and classmate, witnessed these historical events. “We must remember the history of each settlement,” emphasizes the elder.

About 2,500 people live in the village of Temen-Suu, which is located 20 kilometers from the district center.
