The Legend of the Village of Zhalgyz-Oruk: The People Who Cut Down the Only Apricot Tree Became Disabled
Soykooev mentioned that Zhalgyz-Oruk is situated along a small road in the rural municipality of Kyzyl-Suu and consists of 260 households, where more than 1300 people reside. In his childhood, there was an apricot tree growing in the upper part of the village, which, according to the elders, became the cause of misfortunes for those who cut it down, as they subsequently became disabled. Despite the lack of irrigation, this tree bloomed and bore fruit. The elders always warned the locals against cutting down the tree, and when it was eventually cut down, it reportedly "started to bleed." Thus, the village became known because of this single apricot tree. During Soviet times, a collective farm operated here, and after its collapse, the locals switched to agriculture and animal husbandry.
Soykooev also noted that he had been teaching for over 40 years. He emphasized that there is an active youth in their village, and the village is developing actively—new houses are being built, and the locals are leading a decent life.
The village head Kubatbek Bekturov stated that the settlement was founded in the 1930s and is located near the district center. He pointed out the problem of the old school building, which requires renovation, and noted that teachers are trying to attract various projects to improve the quality of education. Among the achievements, he highlighted the repair of internal roads and the improvement of the irrigation system.
The elders added that before the collapse of the Union, the village was called Talap, and its infrastructure is gradually improving year by year. They also mentioned that although a group of villagers once cut down the only apricot tree, a similar tree has appeared again in another part of the village.
