BBC apologizes to Trump but refuses to pay compensation

The incident occurred in connection with the release of the "Panorama" program last year, in which Trump's phrases spoken on January 6, 2021, were edited together in a way that created the impression that he was urging his supporters to storm the Capitol.

In the edited version, the words are: "We will go to the Capitol, I will be with you, and we will fight. We will fight to the end." In the original, these words were spoken with an hour's interval. This program aired a week before the U.S. elections.

Samir Shah, the chairman of the BBC, acknowledged that the editing created a false impression of a call to violence and sent a personal letter to the White House. The corporation also announced that it would no longer broadcast this program in 2024. This scandal led to the resignation of CEO Tim Davie and news department head Deborah Turness.

Trump's lawyers threatened to file a lawsuit against the BBC for $1 billion in damages if the corporation did not publish a retraction, apologize, and pay compensation.

The BBC's statement reads: "While we sincerely regret how the video clip was edited, we do not agree that there are grounds for a defamation lawsuit."
