The entrepreneur faced public opinion after ignoring the boy's protests
Peter Shcherek, a Polish millionaire, has apologized for the incident involving the cap gifted by tennis player Kamil Majchrzak during the US Open tournament. This was reported by RBC.
On August 28, Majchrzak defeated Russia's top player Karen Khachanov in the second round of the tournament in New York. After the match, he decided to delight young fans, including a boy, by offering him the cap. However, a man nearby, who turned out to be Shcherek, snatched the cap and put it in his bag, despite the child's protests.
After a video of the incident appeared on social media, Shcherek was met with a wave of criticism. Although at first the businessman preferred not to respond to the negativity by deleting his accounts, he later succumbed to public pressure.
“I would like to sincerely apologize to the boy, his family, all the fans, and Kamil. I never intended to take such a valuable gift from a young fan. At that moment, I was overwhelmed with emotions from the victory, and I mistakenly thought that Majchrzak was offering the cap to me for my sons, who were asking for autographs,” Shcherek wrote.
According to him, he has already apologized to the boy and sent him the cap.
Tennis player Majchrzak, upon learning of what happened, also found the child and gifted him the cap along with other surprises.
Peter Shcherek and his wife are millionaires and tennis enthusiasts who actively support young Polish players. Their company Drogbruk is a sponsor of the Polish Tennis Federation, as reported by The Times. The size of the Shcherek family's fortune is not disclosed.
