People will start receiving pig kidneys for transplants, - The Guardian
Experts emphasize that the use of genetically modified pig organs can significantly reduce the risk of rejection in recipients.
“The first transplant as part of clinical trials has already taken place, and the next one is scheduled for January,” the source reports.
It is planned that six patients will receive pig kidneys that have been edited at 10 locations in the genome to minimize the risk of rejection. If the FDA gives the green light for the expansion of trials, another 44 patients will be able to undergo such a procedure.
