The National Center for Maternal and Child Health (NCMCH) is for the first time beginning to use immunological testing methods in the kidney transplantation process, as reported by the press service of the Ministry of Health.

Immunological research includes determining histocompatibility between the donor and recipient based on HLA (human leukocyte antigens), as well as performing a crossmatch test, which helps identify antibodies that interact with the cells of a specific donor. Additionally, the PRA (Panel Reactive Antibody) level is calculated, which reflects the level of patient sensitization.

These procedures are crucial in modern transplantation, allowing for precise donor selection, predicting the likelihood of rejection, and adjusting immunosuppressive therapy. As a result, the frequency of acute and chronic rejections decreases, and the lifespan of the transplanted kidney increases.

“The establishment of a genetic testing system is of immense importance for our healthcare system. In the future, this will lay the foundation for ensuring transplant safety, reduce dependence on foreign laboratories, accelerate clinical decision-making, and increase citizens' trust in domestic medicine, in line with international standards,” emphasized the Ministry of Health.

At the NCMCH, the 36th budget kidney transplant operation was successfully performed. The recipient was a 16-year-old girl, S.Z., who had been on chronic hemodialysis since June 2025, and her donor was her 41-year-old mother. The operation was successful, and the condition of both patients is assessed as stable.

“An HLA study was conducted in the NCMCH laboratory for the donor-recipient pair, and the results fully matched the data from the reference laboratory, confirming the high quality and reliability of the tests performed. The center's specialists are confident that this project will be an important step forward in the development of transplantation in Kyrgyzstan and will be implemented on a systematic basis,” the ministry added.
