The BEST installation has reached the final assembly stage
The thermonuclear installation BEST, located in Hefei, has reached an important milestone — the final stage of assembly. According to CCTV News, the level of localization of equipment at this stage is 93.4%.
The localization level at this stage reaches 93.4%, and the installation includes more than 660 unique components that have no analogs in the world. As part of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), it is planned to increase the share of domestic production to 100%, project representatives reported.
After construction is completed, the installation must confirm its ability to operate for extended periods in long pulse mode, which will allow for energy generation through thermonuclear fusion. Developers believe that by 2030, the installation will be able to "light a lamp" for the first time in history using energy from controlled thermonuclear fusion. The project is based on plasma magnetic confinement technology using superconducting magnets and special fuel spheres capable of withstanding temperatures up to 1620 °C.
It was previously reported that the base element of the cryostat was successfully installed on October 1.
