
According to preliminary data, in 2025, there were 532 registered cases of suicides among schoolchildren. The main factors contributing to this were low grades, anxiety about the future, and conflicts with friends, which accounted for 316 cases. Health problems ranked second (315 cases), while family difficulties took third place (181 cases).
The publication reports that last year, Japanese authorities took steps to combat the issue of suicides among children, including increasing the number of school psychologists and developing counseling services on social media.
In 2024, 529 schoolchildren committed suicide, which is 16 cases more than the previous year. From this group, 15 were elementary school students, 163 were middle school students, and 351 were high school students. The main reasons for suicides among youth also remain school difficulties, followed by health problems and family circumstances.
The total number of suicides in the country in 2025 amounted to 19,097, while in 2024, this figure reached 20,320 cases.
