The issue concerns the leak of confidential information
Morgan McSweeney, who headed the administration of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has resigned.
The reason for his decision was a scandal involving Peter Mandelson, as reported by The Guardian and Sky News.
The situation escalated after the U.S. Department of Justice released new documents related to the Jeffrey Epstein case, which mentioned Mandelson's name. Sky News notes that it concerns a possible transfer of confidential information to him while Mandelson held positions in the British government, as TRT in Russian reports.
McSweeney also indicated that he was the one who suggested Keir Starmer appoint Mandelson as ambassador to the U.S., admitting that this decision was a mistake.
"The appointment of Peter Mandelson is a mistake. It has harmed our party, our country, and undermined trust in political institutions," McSweeney noted.
Keir Starmer expressed gratitude for McSweeney's cooperation but did not comment on the scandal itself. According to Sky News, McSweeney's position in the Labour Party was ambiguous: some MPs believed he was distancing the party's left wing.
Peter Mandelson was relieved of his role as the UK ambassador to the U.S. in September. Recently, he also left the Labour Party. The Guardian reported that the reason was data from the so-called "Epstein files," which claimed that Mandelson may have received $75,000 from the financier.
Jeffrey Epstein served a prison sentence for organizing prostitution in 2008-2009. In July 2019, he was arrested on charges of coercing minors into prostitution.
In August of the same year, Epstein was found dead in his prison cell in Manhattan. In December 2025, the first part of the documents related to his case was released.
Previously released data had already indicated Epstein's connections with prominent figures, including British Prince Andrew, who subsequently lost his royal title.
