A 51-year-old food blogger, Emma Amit, tragically passed away in the Philippines after tasting the devil crab — the most poisonous representative of its kind in the country — while filming a video. This was reported by the Daily Mail.
Amit went with friends to a mangrove forest in search of crabs and mollusks. After a successful hunt, she prepared a dish in coconut milk and filmed the entire process for her blog. After the group ate, her friends went home.
However, soon the woman began to feel unwell. She lost consciousness in her home, experienced convulsions, and her lips turned blue. Emma was urgently taken to intensive care, but unfortunately, she could not be saved. Her friends are currently being monitored by doctors, but they are feeling well.
According to local authorities, an investigation into her death has already begun. Police examined the location where Amit prepared the seafood and found the shells of devil crabs, whose meat is highly toxic.
Laddy Gemang, the head of the village where Amit lived, expressed his shock at what happened. He noted that she was an experienced fisherman and should have known about the toxicity of devil crabs. "Why did she decide to eat it? That's a question that troubles me," Gemang added.
The devil crab (Zosimus aeneus) inhabits coral reefs and is easily identified by its characteristic brown spots on a light shell. Its meat and shell contain dangerous neurotoxins (tetrodotoxin and saxitoxin) that are not destroyed even by cooking. This species is the most poisonous in the Philippines.
