
The largest population increase in January 2026 was observed in the following regions: Astana with 0.61%, Shymkent with 0.33%, Almaty region with 0.27%, Almaty with 0.14%, and Mangystau region with 0.13%.
Natural population growth, when the number of newborns exceeds the number of deaths, was recorded in all regions except for three. In East and North Kazakhstan, there is a natural decline, while in Pavlodar region, the growth was zero.
Emigration has significantly affected half of the regions in the country, leading to a decrease in population in Abai, East Kazakhstan, Zhambyl, Zhetysu, Kostanay, Pavlodar, North Kazakhstan, Turkestan regions, and Ulytau.
Only in three major cities, as well as in Akmolinsk and Almaty regions, is there a positive migration balance, while in other regions, the number of people leaving exceeds the number of newly arrived migrants.
In the first month of 2026, the urban population of Kazakhstan increased by 0.16%, reaching 13,096 thousand people, while the rural population decreased by 0.04%, totaling 7,413 thousand people. The share of the urban population is 63.5%, while the rural population is 36.5%.
