At the summit, a joint declaration by the leaders of Central Asia on regional cooperation in ecology and sustainable development will be signed.
From April 22 to 24, 2026, the Regional Ecological Summit (RES) will take place in the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana. This was reported by the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
About 1500 delegates are expected to participate in the event, including representatives of government bodies from the region, international organizations, experts, businesses, and civil society.
During the plenary session, speeches are anticipated from the presidents of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Armenia, Mongolia, and other high-ranking guests.
The main goal of the forum is to develop solutions to climate and environmental challenges in cooperation with the United Nations.
The idea of holding the summit was announced by the President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in 2023 and was confirmed at the 80th session in 2025.
Support for RES 2026 is provided by important organizations such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the International Energy Agency (IEA), and other global and regional institutions.
The UN officially confirmed its support for this initiative with General Assembly resolution 78/147 on December 19, 2023, which emphasizes the need to strengthen regional solidarity to address environmental issues in Central Asia.
The summit will also aim to create coordinated and practical solutions that take into account regional challenges in climate and ecology, including the problem of the Aral Sea and the declining level of the Caspian Sea.
The priorities of the summit include identifying Central Asia's financing needs for environmental initiatives, supporting adaptation measures, developing low-carbon technologies, and enhancing the region's ecological resilience.
A joint declaration by the heads of state of Central Asia regarding regional cooperation in ecology and sustainable development is expected to be signed at the summit.
A regional action program for 2026–2030 is also planned to be approved in collaboration with UN agencies to achieve a sustainable future for Central Asia.
Additionally, new ecological projects and initiatives aimed at key discussion areas will be launched as part of the summit.
