A law has been adopted in Russia that protects foreigners and stateless persons who participated in hostilities on the side of the Russian Federation from extradition for criminal prosecution.

According to President Vladimir Putin, this law prohibits the extradition of such individuals if they are or were contracted to serve in the ranks of the Russian army or in other military formations of the country.

Under the new legislation, extradition is not permitted for those who participated in hostilities during their service.

The law was approved by the State Duma on February 26 and confirmed by the Federation Council on March 4.

Foreign citizens began to have the opportunity to sign contracts for service in the Russian army starting in November 2022, while stateless persons have been able to do so since July of last year.
