How many foreigners live in Mongolia?

According to InsideMongolia, by the end of 2025, more than 34,000 foreigners from 136 countries are living in Mongolia. The increase in the number of foreign citizens by 7.4% compared to last year indicates stable growth rather than a temporary phenomenon.

🍰 The largest share among foreigners consists of citizens of China, followed by Russians, Indians, South Koreans, and Americans.

⚖️ Legal Norms

According to Mongolia's legislation on the legal status of foreign citizens, the maximum share of foreigners in the country for personal reasons should not exceed 3% of the total population, and the share of citizens of a specific nationality should be 1%. Currently, foreigners make up only 0.9% of Mongolia's population, which opens opportunities for further immigration growth within the existing norms. Citizens of China account for 0.6%, while Russians make up 0.09%, Indians 0.06%, South Koreans 0.04%, and Americans 0.03%.

🏗️ Employment and Study Sectors

Analysis shows that the main reason for the increase in the number of foreigners in Mongolia is the demand for labor and active investments. Foreign citizens work in various sectors, including mining, construction, as well as in services and logistics. Investors and students represent the next largest groups, strengthening Mongolia's position as a center for project implementation and educational initiatives.

📈 Significance of this Growth

The increase in the number of foreign citizens reflects changes in Mongolia's economic structure. Labor shortages, capital-intensive projects, and closer integration with neighboring markets contribute to these processes. Although absolute numbers remain relatively small, the observed trend indicates that in the coming years, foreigners will play an important role in the labor, investment, and urban sectors of Mongolia.

Among the registered foreigners in the country, 560 are there for official business, 17,168 for work contracts, 5,213 for studies, 5,329 for investments, 1,767 for immigration, 134 for religious reasons, 3,022 for family circumstances, and 1,079 for other personal reasons. The total number of foreigners in Mongolia for work and personal reasons has increased by 7.4% compared to the same period last year.
