From April to November 2025, there were more than 230 bear attacks on humans in Japan, of which 13 cases ended tragically, reports Bloomberg. This number surpassed the previous record just four months before the end of the year.

During this period, bears were observed nearly 37,000 times, whereas last year this figure was around 18,000. In response to this issue, the government allocated 22 million dollars to combat bears, but the effectiveness of these measures has yet to be seen.

The main reason for the increase in the number of attacks, experts say, is the reduction of agricultural land that was previously located in mountainous areas, where bears came for food. With the decrease of this land, brown bears have started to leave their usual habitats more frequently and encounter urban residents.
