The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Benin, Olusegun Ajadi Bakari, told Reuters that the coup attempt was carried out by a small group of military personnel, while the majority of the army remains loyal to the government. He clarified that the rebels were able to take control of only the state television, and the signal was interrupted for just a few minutes.

A military source noted: "This is just a small group that has access only to the television. Regular troops are regaining control. The capital and the entire country are completely safe, as is the president with his family."
