US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced the suspension of the Diversity Visa (DV1) program, known as the green card lottery, in response to the recent shooting at Brown University.
According to her, the shooter Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, who obtained a green card through the DV1 program in 2017, was the reason for this measure.
On her page on the social network X, Noem stated: "At the direction of President Trump, I have immediately ordered the suspension of the DV1 program to ensure the safety of Americans and prevent similar tragedies in the future."
The incident occurred on December 13 in Providence, Rhode Island, where two students were killed as a result of the shooting.
The shooter, 48-year-old Portuguese citizen Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, previously studied at Brown University in 2000. He is also suspected of murdering a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which occurred two days after the shooting. On December 18, Neves Valente was found dead in a warehouse in New Hampshire, with the cause of death being suicide. The motives for his actions have not yet been established.
