Edlow clarified that this concerns the countries mentioned in Trump's decree from June 2025. This decree imposed a ban on entry into the U.S. for citizens of 12 countries, including Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen. Additionally, entry was restricted for citizens of seven other countries, including Togo, Turkmenistan, Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, and Venezuela.
Other details regarding the review were not disclosed.
Edlow's statement came just two days after the shooting that occurred near the White House, which injured two National Guard servicemen. The suspect in the shooting was identified as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a native of Afghanistan. Unfortunately, one of the injured, 20-year-old serviceman Sarah Bexstrom, died in the hospital.
In his message on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated that he would "permanently stop immigration from all third-world countries" and promised to deport "everyone" who does not contribute to the U.S.
CIA Director John Ratcliffe noted that Rahmanullah Lakanwal had previously worked with the U.S. government, including the Central Intelligence Agency, in his homeland. He arrived in the U.S. under a special program aimed at resettling Afghans who cooperated with American forces and feared persecution from the Taliban. More than 70,000 people have relocated to the United States under this program.
