According to information provided by the Russian service of the BBC, the Trump administration plans to conduct a review of green cards issued to individuals who immigrated from 19 countries. This measure is a response to a recent incident at the White House, during which members of the National Guard were injured, and the suspect turned out to be a citizen of Afghanistan.

Joseph Edlow, head of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), noted that the president has ordered a "comprehensive and thorough review of all green cards issued to foreigners from countries of concern."

In response to the BBC's inquiry about which specific countries are subject to review, USCIS referred to an order signed by Trump in June, which restricts entry for citizens of 12 countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, as well as imposing partial restrictions on seven more countries.

The decision to review green cards came after Afghan Rahmanullah Lakanwal was arrested in Washington on Wednesday, suspected of a shooting that seriously injured two members of the National Guard. One of the injured, Sarah Beckstrom, died in the hospital.

Lakanwal arrived in the U.S. in 2021 under a program providing special immigration protection for Afghans following the withdrawal of American troops.

According to President Trump, this incident underscores serious threats to national security.

In his announcement regarding the planned review of green cards, Edlow did not mention the shooting but emphasized that protecting the American people and the country is a top priority. He added that the public should not bear the burden of costs caused by the failed immigration policies of the previous administration.

No additional details regarding the re-evaluation process have been reported yet.
