The FBI is actively investigating the circumstances of an incident in which an Afghan immigrant opened fire on two National Guard soldiers near the White House. The incident, which occurred on the eve of Thanksgiving, has been characterized by officials as an "ambush," according to Reuters.

The condition of the two soldiers, who were performing law enforcement duties, was critical, and they subsequently died. The suspect, who was injured during the shooting, has been identified by the Department of Homeland Security as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a citizen of Afghanistan.

At the time of the incident, Donald Trump was at his resort in Florida and released a statement late in the evening, calling the shooting "acts of evil, hatred, and terror." He also mentioned plans for his administration to review the lists of Afghans who resettled in the U.S. under President Joe Biden.

In response to the incident, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services temporarily suspended the processing of all immigration applications from Afghan citizens until security protocols can be reviewed.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, Rahmanullah Lakanwal was part of the "Welcome Allies" program launched in 2021 to resettle Afghans who worked with the U.S. during the war in Afghanistan and faced the risk of persecution from the Taliban. As reported by NBC News, citing an anonymous relative of the suspect, Lakanwal spent 10 years in the Afghan army, serving alongside American special forces, and spent some time in Kandahar.
