U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced on social media platform X the suspension of the Diversity Visa (DV1) program, which allows for green card lotteries. This decision was made in light of a recent incident involving Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, a suspect in a shooting at Brown University. He arrived in the country in 2017 under this same program and later obtained permanent resident status.

“This person should not have been allowed to enter our country,” Kristi Noem commented on the situation.

She reminded that back in 2017, Donald Trump, while serving as president, called for the termination of the visa lottery following a tragic event in New York, where a terrorist who exploited the DV1 program carried out a truck attack on pedestrians, claiming the lives of eight people.

As a result of Trump's directive, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) was instructed to immediately suspend the DV1 program. The Secretary stated that this decision is aimed at protecting American citizens from potential threats.

Kristi Noem emphasized: “In accordance with President Trump's directive, I am ordering the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to immediately stop the DV1 program so that no citizens are harmed by the consequences of this dangerous program.”

The timeline for the suspension and further steps in this direction have not yet been determined.
