Experts noted that successful navigation requires the ability to recognize the main navigational stars and celestial bodies.
“The simplest and most reliable way to determine direction is by observing the Sun. It rises in the east and sets in the west,” the institute explained.
For nighttime navigation, it is recommended to use constellations such as the Big Dipper and Ursa Minor.
“The North Star, which indicates north, becomes an important landmark at night. Although it is not the brightest star in the sky and may be difficult to see due to urban lighting, it is much easier to spot the well-known asterism of seven stars — the Big Dipper (part of Ursa Major). Draw an imaginary line through the two outer stars of the Dipper (Dubhe and Merak) and extend it upwards by five equal segments. You will come across a faint star in Ursa Minor — that is the North Star. Thus, even if you cannot see the final destination, the direction to the north can be easily determined,” the press service specialists added.
