Statement on the case of Askat Zhetigen: a letter from prison has been published

Gulshaiyr Abdirasulova raised alarming questions about torture and deficiencies in the investigation of Zhetigen's case

Human rights activist Gulshaiyr Abdirasulova reported receiving a letter from the akyn Askat Zhetigen, who is in prison. She noted that he feels fine, teaching other inmates to play the komuz, and his songs continue to be popular among the people.
Additionally, she emphasized the issues related to his case.

Abdirasulova claims that during Zhetigen's time at the GKNB office in Bishkek, he was subjected to torture, including beatings, the use of a stun gun, and strangulation. For over two and a half years, no criminal case has been initiated regarding these facts, despite the presence of known suspects, according to her.

In her address, the human rights activist also touches on broader issues concerning law enforcement practices. She points out the reasons why a number of convicted individuals, including Kanykey Aranova and Adilet Baltabay, remain in custody, and their cases are not being reviewed. It is mentioned that there is a need to hold accountable those who may have been involved in fabricating charges.

In a letter dated March 26, 2026, Askat Zhetigen addresses his compatriots and loved ones, sharing thoughts based on folk wisdom. He speaks of being "like a bird in a cage" for his truth, stating that he has not renounced his beliefs and continues to follow the principles of justice.

Zhetigen emphasizes that he endures all trials with fortitude and that, despite his imprisonment, his creativity continues to thrive: his songs resonate and inspire the youth. He notes that this indicates his work finds a response in society.

Furthermore, in the letter, he speaks about the importance of the ancestors' legacy—their feats and teachings, which remain a significant guide. Concluding his address, Zhetigen expresses hope for a soon reunion with his loved ones and confidence that his service to the people is still ahead.
