Anthony Joshua addresses the public for the first time after the fatal car accident

Anthony Joshua, the famous British boxer and two-time world heavyweight champion, made his first public comment following the tragic car accident that occurred on December 29, 2025, in Nigeria. As a result of the incident, his close friends - Sina Gami and Latif Ayodele - lost their lives.

The accident took place on the Lagos-Ibadan highway while Joshua was heading to spend the New Year holidays with his family, accompanied by his friends. The athlete survived, but his companions, who were part of his training team, did not survive the tragedy.

On January 4, 2026, Joshua posted two photos on social media: one featuring him with his family, including his mother, and the other with the relatives of the deceased. The post was captioned "My Brother's Keeper," marking his first response to the incident.

According to the Nigerian Traffic Control Agency (TRACE), the cause of the accident was a tire blowout at high speed during an overtaking maneuver, which led to a loss of control and a collision with a truck parked on the roadside. Authorities noted that speeding was one of the main causes of the accident.

The driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, was charged with dangerous driving resulting in death, as well as driving without a valid license. The court set bail at £2,500 (approximately 5 million naira), and a hearing for the case is scheduled for January 20, 2026.

After returning to the UK, Joshua attended the memorial services and funerals of his friends, which took place at the Central Mosque in London, gathering hundreds of people to bid farewell to Sina Gami and Latif Ayodele.
