FIFA has announced a significant technological upgrade that will be implemented at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. Unique 3D models will be created for each of the 1,248 participants in the tournament, with the scanning process for each player taking just one second and becoming a mandatory step before the start of the competition.
These digital avatars will be used to enhance the accuracy of the semi-automatic offside detection system. Additionally, they will enable the creation of detailed visualizations of refereeing decisions, which will be broadcast in real-time at stadiums and on television, allowing viewers to better understand complex moments of the game.
This technology has already demonstrated its effectiveness at the FIFA Intercontinental Cup and will be applied in all matches of the World Cup, promising to increase the transparency of officiating and improve the spectacle of sporting events.
