On February 17, public hearings regarding the improvement of air quality in the atmosphere took place in Bishkek. This was reported by the city administration.
During the event, the focus was on two main issues — smog and air pollution. Participants asked numerous questions and made suggestions that will be taken into account in the future.
Among the participants were the mayor of Bishkek, Aibek Junushaliev, the speaker of the Bishkek City Council, Bekzhan Usenaliev, deputies of the Jogorku Kenesh, members of the Environmental Council, experts, representatives of government bodies, construction and financial institutions, media, bloggers, and active citizens, totaling more than 150 people.
Mayor Aibek Junushaliev reported that the recommendations from the previous meeting of the Environmental Council had been implemented. In 2025, the greening plan was increased from 15,000 to 18,000 seedlings, which were planted in schools and neighborhoods of the city. In 2026, the plan will consist of 50,000 seedlings: contracts have already been signed, and the supply of planting material is currently underway. Before planting, the plants are adapted in nurseries, which contributes to their better survival.
“The Environmental Council is a platform where the city administration is ready to listen to criticism and constructive suggestions, develop action plans, and report on the results at the end of the year,” noted Junushaliev.
The event took place at an eco-technological plant that produces electricity from solid household waste, located at the Bishkek sanitary landfill.
The mayor conducted a tour of the new plant for the hearing participants, emphasizing the significance of its construction as an important step towards improving the ecology in Bishkek.
At the end of the meeting, Mayor Aibek Junushaliev expressed gratitude to all participants for their active civic stance and assured that all initiatives voiced at the Environmental Council would be taken into account by the relevant departments of the city administration.
The meeting was organized by the Bishkek city administration and the Institute for Development Policy.
