Kumtor and New Projects: How the Mining Industry of Kyrgyzstan is Strengthened

From 2021 to 2025, Kyrgyzstan is demonstrating positive results in the mining sector, which is associated with increased investments, active geological exploration, and the implementation of new projects. This information is provided by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision. The most notable achievements were recorded in 2024 and 2025. In particular, in 2024, after the completion of large-scale geological exploration at Kumtor, gold reserves increased by 147.4 tons and were added to the state balance. This opens up opportunities for long-term operation of the mine, ensuring its sustainable operation in accordance with environmental and social standards.

In the following year, 2025, gold and silver reserves from the Kumtor tailings storage facility were also included in the state balance: 121 tons of gold and 225 tons of silver. This project is designed for 17 years, and the design work will be completed in the first half of 2025, allowing for the launch of key facilities.

At the Buchuk site in the Solton-Sary deposit, located in the Naryn region, a gold processing plant is already operating in pilot mode, having started gold production.

Additionally, the Ministry of Natural Resources noted a growing interest in the coal industry. Since the beginning of 2025, 34 licenses for coal mining have been issued, and more than 20 new sites have been put into operation. Among them are the gold-bearing Shakhtal deposit in the Naryn region and the coal deposits of Kozho-Kelen and Besh-Burkhan in the Osh region.

The ministry emphasizes that all measures taken are aimed at meeting the needs of the domestic market and increasing the export potential of the country.
