The decline in the popularity of diesel cars in Europe is a logical result of long-term changes in the market. After the scandal with Volkswagen, known as "Dieselgate," in 2017, sales of gasoline cars surpassed those of diesel cars, and in 2021, a similar trend occurred with traditional hybrid models. In 2022, fully electric vehicles also began to capture a more significant market share.
Experts emphasize that diesel cars have lost their positions in key segments. Strict environmental regulations and increased electrification of vehicle production have led to models like the VW Polo and Renault Clio no longer offering diesel versions.
Technological competition has also played an important role: modern gasoline engines have become much more fuel-efficient, reducing the advantages of diesel vehicles. Additionally, the long-term strategy of the European Union aimed at banning the sale of internal combustion engine vehicles by 2035 is also putting pressure on the market.
While diesel cars are losing popularity, hybrid models continue to gain ground. From January to October 2025, their market share reached 34.7%, surpassing that of gasoline (26.9%) and electric vehicles (18.3%). Analysts expect demand for electric vehicles to grow, thanks to the emergence of new budget models and the active entry of Chinese brands into the market. The release of the new generation Renault Twingo is expected soon, and in 2026, the Volkswagen ID. Polo will appear, followed by more affordable models.
