There is a troubling trend emerging in the Russian automotive market related to the so-called "Dagestan scheme" for selling cars. This scheme involves the active offering of vehicles imported from Kyrgyzstan at significantly reduced prices. Such advertisements most often mention popular models like the Toyota Camry, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and Hyundai Tucson, the prices of which can be hundreds of thousands of rubles lower than usual, according to media reports.

This scheme works as follows: the cars remain registered to citizens of Kyrgyzstan, and the transfer of rights to them is carried out through a general power of attorney. Sellers justify the low prices by citing the peculiarities of customs legislation in Kyrgyzstan; however, lawyers warn of the high legal risks associated with this approach. In fact, the buyer does not become the owner of the vehicle but only obtains a temporary right to use it.
The geographical scope of this scheme raises particular concern among experts. Initially, the problem was mainly observed in the North Caucasian regions, but now similar offers can be found throughout Russia. Fraudsters are targeting motorists in major cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg.
History shows that such schemes are usually curtailed by the authorities sooner or later. An example can be seen in the mass confiscation of cars with Armenian and Abkhazian license plates, when owners faced huge customs reassessments. According to the Federal Customs Service, several hundred cases related to the illegal import of vehicles have been initiated over the past year.
Experts emphasize that purchasing a car through this scheme can lead not only to financial losses but also to serious obligations to the state. Customs authorities may demand payment of all arrears, including recycling fees and customs duties, making such a "bargain purchase" extremely risky. In some cases, the amount of reassessments can reach 20 million rubles, significantly exceeding the actual value of the vehicle.
In light of the current situation, potential buyers need to exercise increased caution and understand that saving money on a car with a questionable legal history may lead to serious financial and legal problems in the future.
