A therapist at the Family Medicine Center No. 8, Nargilya Chomokeeva, issued a warning about the potential dangers arising from the combination of alcohol with certain medications.
She noted that there is no safe dose of alcohol, and residents of the Asian region are at greater risk due to physiological features. For representatives of the Mongoloid race, for example, there is a low level of the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase, which is responsible for breaking down ethanol.
According to the specialist, the combination of alcohol with psychiatric medications is particularly dangerous. "Antidepressants and sleeping pills, such as clonazepam, are absolutely incompatible with alcohol. This is strictly prohibited," emphasized Chomokeeva.
Doctors also warn about the risks associated with antibiotics. Chomokeeva added that not all antibiotics have been studied in the context of their interaction with alcohol. The most well-known drugs, such as amoxicillin and ampicillin, have been studied in more detail; however, data on the safety of their combination with alcohol remains ambiguous.
"From a medical point of view, it is recommended to avoid consuming alcohol together with antibiotics, even if there is no direct evidence of serious consequences," added the therapist.
The doctor specifically addressed medications containing paracetamol. She explained that paracetamol is a hepatotoxic agent, and exceeding the recommended dose in combination with alcohol can cause serious liver damage.
"In case of exceeding the dosage, especially with alcohol, there is a risk of toxic hepatitis. Liver cirrhosis may not develop immediately, but the likelihood of its occurrence with such a combination exists," she explained.
Chomokeeva emphasized the importance of strictly adhering to the dosages of all medications and completely refraining from alcohol to avoid negative health consequences.
