The British Foreign Office has updated the list of countries where one can be poisoned by alcohol.

The updated list, which is posted on the official FCDO website, now includes eight new countries: Ecuador, Kenya, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Uganda, and Russia. Previously, the list included Cambodia, Indonesia, Turkey, Costa Rica, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Fiji.

The department clarified that methanol is a dangerous chemical that is sometimes added to alcoholic beverages to reduce costs. It has neither taste nor smell, making it difficult to detect. Even small doses of this substance can cause blindness or lead to death within 12-48 hours after consumption.

The expansion of the list is related to the increase in cases of severe poisoning, including a tragic incident in which six tourists died in a hostel in Laos at the end of last year.
