In Switzerland, the president for 2026 has been elected

Guy Parmelin, the Minister of Economy of Switzerland and a member of the Swiss People's Party, has been re-elected as the country's president for 2026, as reported by Kazinform.

According to information from the Swissinfo portal, on Wednesday his candidacy received support from 203 votes out of 210 valid ballots, which is a record result since the beginning of the 21st century.

The Vice President elected was Ignazio Cassis from the Radical Liberal Party, who received 144 votes out of 190 valid ballots.

The 66-year-old Parmelin will begin his duties next year, replacing Karin Keller-Sutter, who represents the Radical Liberal Party from the canton of St. Gallen. This will be his second term as president.

The voting for the new president took place in parliament. Parmelin is also known for his active role in negotiations with the USA regarding tariff reductions.

It is important to note that unlike many countries, the president of Switzerland does not hold real power; it is exercised by the Federal Council, which is a collective body. Each of its seven members serves as president on a rotating basis for one year.
