José Antonio Kast won the presidential elections in Chile

59-year-old José Antonio Kast, representing the Republican Party, has won the presidential elections in Chile, reports Kazinform, citing information from DW.

According to the electoral commission, over 59% of voters cast their ballots for Kast, which accounted for 83% of the total votes.

This is his third attempt to hold the presidential office. During the election campaign, he emphasized strict measures to combat crime and illegal immigration.

Kast will be the first president of Chile to represent far-right views since the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, which lasted from 1973 to 1990. He was born in Santiago, received a law degree from the Catholic University of the city, and has been involved in politics for over 30 years.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio congratulated Kast on his successful election to the presidency.

He noted on the social network X that the United States looks forward to productive cooperation with the new president to strengthen regional security and improve trade relations.
