The announcement of Vorontsova's appointment appeared on the official website of the Faculty of Fundamental Medicine at Lomonosov Moscow State University. The press release also mentions other personnel appointments: Konstantin Kulebyakin has become the Deputy Director for Science, and Maxim Domashenko has taken the position of Deputy Director responsible for clinical work at the University Clinic of the MNOI.

The creation of the MNOI took place in November 2023 by decision of the Academic Council of Moscow State University, when the Faculty of Fundamental Medicine, the Center for Regenerative Medicine, and the university clinic were merged. The first director of the institute was appointed biologist Vsevolod Tkachuk, while Maria Vorontsova took the position of Deputy Director for Scientific Activities.

Vorontsova is a trained endocrinologist. She graduated from the Faculty of Fundamental Medicine at Moscow State University, after which she continued her education in residency and postgraduate studies at the Federal State Budgetary Institution "National Medical Research Center for Endocrinology." In 2017, she defended her PhD dissertation on the treatment of children with pituitary dwarfism. Over the years, she has worked in scientific and educational institutions, was a member of the council for the implementation of the Federal Scientific and Technical Program in the field of genetic technologies, and held the position of Deputy Dean at the Faculty of Fundamental Medicine at Moscow State University.

After the onset of the full-scale conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Maria Vorontsova, like her sister Ekaterina Tikhonova, found herself under sanctions from the European Union, the United States, and several other countries.

The Anti-Corruption Foundation previously reported that Vorontsova received significant payments from the "New Medical Company" ("NOMEKO"), in which she was a co-founder and a member of the board of directors. The publication "Project" noted that the company is engaged in research in the field of genetic technologies and anti-aging medicine.
