In August 2026, Mongolia will host the preliminary qualifying matches of Group D for the 2029 Asian Basketball Championship.
This tournament features Mongolia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Fiji. The competition will take place from August 24 to September 1, 2026, and will determine which teams will continue in the qualifying process.
The goal of this tournament is to select teams that can advance to the second stage of the FIBA Asia Cup qualification, and subsequently to the main continental championship and other international competitions. Of all the participants in the preliminary stage, the top three teams will advance to the second round of qualification.
Kyrgyzstan will also participate in Group B, competing against teams from Kazakhstan, Palestine, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives.
Mongolia has significant experience in organizing major international basketball events. Since 2022, the country has hosted important FIBA tournaments, including the preliminary qualifying matches for the Asia Cup, the qualifying round of the Women's Asia Championship, the FIBA Asia Cup U16 2025, and the FIBA 3x3 World Championship 2025.
Additionally, Mongolia has hosted club competitions such as the Final Four of the Asian Champions League and East 2025. These events highlight Mongolia's growing reputation as a host of continental and international basketball tournaments.
