Hundreds of National Guard soldiers were deployed in the states of Mississippi and Tennessee to clear roads and assist drivers who found themselves in difficult situations, as well as residents left without electricity.
The National Weather Service warned of an impending cold snap caused by the influx of Arctic air into the southeastern regions of the United States. In Nashville, temperatures could drop to -10 °C on Friday night, and with the wind, it could feel like -18 °C. Authorities reported the closure of sections of interstate highways I-55 and I-22 in northern Mississippi and noted the existing risks associated with icy conditions.
