In 2025, Tajikistan significantly increased its electricity exports, supplying neighboring countries with 5.356 billion kWh. This is an increase of 37.3% (or 1.454 billion kWh) compared to the previous year, according to the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources and reports from Asia-Plus.
The main importers of Tajik electricity include:
▪️ Afghanistan, which received 1.8 billion kWh worth 742 million somoni ($79.1 million), accounting for over 80% of the total exports to these three countries;
▪️ Uzbekistan, which imported 895 million kWh worth 170 million somoni ($18.1 million);
▪️ Kyrgyzstan, which purchased 12 million kWh for 1 million somoni ($106.6 thousand).
Thus, electricity exports to these three countries brought Tajikistan 913 million somoni ($97.3 million), with a total supply volume of 2.7 billion kWh.
The Ministry noted that over 90% of the supplies occurred from April to September, when the water level in the rivers is at its highest.
In 2025, the total electricity generation in Tajikistan amounted to nearly 24 billion kWh, which is 6.5% higher than the previous year's level.
At the same time, Tajikistan significantly increased its electricity imports, purchasing 2.7 billion kWh, which is 67% more than in 2024. Of this amount, 2.688 billion kWh were imported from Uzbekistan during the winter months, while 13.9 million kWh came from Kyrgyzstan, to which Tajikistan sells electricity in the summer.
Electricity losses last year amounted to approximately 4 billion kWh, which is equivalent to 15% of the total production volume, a decrease of 3.6% compared to 2024.
