Trump proposed to develop a new treaty with Russia on nuclear deterrence

Trump announced this on his page on the social network Truth Social. He emphasized that during his first presidential term, he completely updated the U.S. armed forces, including new and modernized nuclear systems.

“I was able to prevent nuclear conflicts in regions such as Pakistan and India, Iran and Israel, as well as between Russia and Ukraine. Instead of extending the New START Treaty (which is unfavorable for the U.S. and, among other things, is seriously violated), we should trust our nuclear experts to develop a new, more effective, and modern treaty that can operate on a long-term basis,” Donald Trump stated.

The New START Treaty was signed on April 8, 2010, and entered into force on February 5, 2011; in February 2021, it was extended for five years. Recently, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation confirmed that the treaty has expired.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres characterized this period as “a difficult time for international security” and called on the parties to immediately begin negotiations to create a new mechanism for nuclear arms control.
