South Korean crypto exchange mistakenly transferred $44 billion in Bitcoin to clients

The incident occurred during a promotional campaign and was not related to hacking attacks or security issues, as reported by the company from Seoul.

According to information from the exchange, 695 clients were supposed to receive bonuses of 2,000 won (approximately $1.37). However, instead, each of them was credited with at least 2,000 bitcoins. Many of the lucky recipients began selling the assets they received, which caused a sharp decline in the Bitcoin price by 17% in the short term.

Bithumb apologized for the incident and noted that it has already managed to recover 99.7% of the 620,000 bitcoins that were mistakenly distributed. This exchange is one of the largest in South Korea and ranks second in trading volume after Upbit.
