Four people have been arrested in South Korea on suspicion of illegally accessing over 120,000 surveillance cameras in private homes and offices, with the aim of creating sexualized content for a foreign website, reports the "Russian Service of the BBC."

According to police information, the arrests were made on Sunday, and the accused exploited vulnerabilities in the cameras, which are often protected by simple passwords.

According to media reports, the hackers gained access to cameras installed in private homes, karaoke bars, pilates studios, and medical facilities.

The National Police Agency of South Korea clarified that the detainees acted independently of each other.

One of the suspects is accused of hacking 63,000 cameras and creating 545 explicit videos, which were sold for 35 million won (about $23,862).

Another suspect, according to police, hacked 70,000 cameras and sold 648 video recordings for 18 million won (approximately $12,272).

These two suspects accounted for about 62% of all video recordings posted on the website that illegally distributed content obtained from hacked cameras.

Currently, the police are working to block and shut down this website, as well as cooperating with foreign law enforcement agencies to identify its owner. Additionally, three individuals have been arrested on suspicion of purchasing and viewing materials from this website.

According to Park Woo-hyun, head of the Cyber Investigation Department of the National Police Agency of South Korea, "hacking home cameras and hidden filming are serious crimes that cause immense harm to victims."

He also added that "viewing and storing illegally obtained video recordings are also crimes, and we will actively investigate such cases."

The victims have received notifications from the authorities: police representatives visited 58 addresses, informing people about what happened and recommending that they change their passwords. The police are also assisting in the removal and blocking of illegal content and are working to identify other victims.

As noted by the National Police Agency, "it is important for home camera owners to be vigilant, change access passwords immediately, and do so regularly in the future."
